There are some significant technological changes occurring in the market, says Frost & Sullivan medical analyst Marie Stuckey in the new study, WORLD OPHTHALMIC PHARMACEUTICAL MARKETS. "Product improvements are occurring in many markets, while new therapeutic classes are expanding in the glaucoma- related pharmaceuticals market. (We are) in the midst of a very exciting time."
Traditional drug delivery therapies - eye drops, for example - are yielding to innovations like implantables, infusion-type products, oral and slow-release delivery systems. While those older therapies are slow to change - generic usage traditionally lags - the opportunity to counter myriad side effects cannot be ignored.
Then there are demographic trends contributing to potential growth in the ophthalmic pharmaceuticals market, identified by Frost & Sullivan:
Growing populations create more allergens that irritate eyes, while the number of elderly requiring eye care is rising. Developing regions demand improved eye care, and increasing numbers of patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) often have cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections of the eye in the late stages of the disease. This number is increasing since AIDs patients are living longer. Infected people remain on anti-viral medication for the remainder of their lives to avoid a recurrence of infection.
According Frost & Sullivan, revenues for the ophthalmic pharmaceuticals industry totaled $3.3 billion in 1995, and are projected to reach $5.4 billion by 2002.
The key to reaching that forecast lies in forming collaborative and licensing agreements. Leading pharmaceutical companies are often combining with firms that have new drug delivery systems.
This study by Frost & Sullivan details in length how and why some companies stand to gain - and some to lose - ophthalmic market shares.
