(BW) (AIDS-PROJECT-MARCH) "Give Hope a Chance" March against AIDS, Nov. 9

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Thursday, 7 November 1996.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 7, 1996--With "Hope" as its theme, a group of Santa Monica AIDS Project clients, volunteers, friends and others will march more than a mile down a major Westside thoroughfare, Saturday, Nov. 9.

Dubbed "Give Hope a Chance," the march is expected to attract more than 200 people, as SMAP officially moves from its old home in the 300 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, to its new and larger facility 17 blocks east, which also houses the Mountains AIDS Foundation. The march will begin at 11 a.m., on the Third Street Promenade at Santa Monica Boulevard.

Marchers, who will carry balloons and banners proclaiming "Hope," will include Santa Monica High School students, theater groups and members of the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles. The chorus will also perform at the end of the march.

"With new drugs, there clearly is hope now for people with HIV, but they must have access to these medications, which can be exorbitantly expensive," said Hywel W. Sims, SMAP executive director.

"The march will not only celebrate our new home, but will seek to remind the public that we must continue to fight for access to the best medical treatment available to all those affected by HIV and AIDS," Sims said.

SMAP, which was founded in 1992, is the only agency west of the 405 Freeway to provide direct case management services to people with HIV. The agency currently serves 84 clients and, since its inception, has served 200 people with HIV and AIDS.

The private nonprofit organization offers comprehensive case management support (including public benefits counseling, housing, transportation and drug assistance programs); referrals to emotional support services; education (targeted at teenagers, homeless people, and others) and information to the general public.

Sims said the new home will allow SMAP to expand services, including group meetings, workshops, HIV testing, and a warm, supportive environment for clients to socialize and share information with each other.
