Protease Inhibitors are the latest weapons in the battle against HIV/AIDS. Protease Inhibitors work by interrupting the replication of HIV cells. In the CD4 or T cell, the medicine acts to attach itself to the HIV protease enzymes, preventing the cells from fully reproducing and creating more HIV infected T cells.
These medications have shown dramatic results in lowering the viral load, or amount of the virus (RNA), in the blood stream. In combination with other medicines, Protease Inhibitors have shown a reduction of up to 99% of viral load.
VIRACEPT T is the first Protease Inhibitor to cross the blood-brain barrier, allowing greater potential for the medication to work in more areas of the body.
VIRACEPT T is not expected to be cross-resistant with other Protease Inhibitors. This is important for people who have become resistant to the benefits of other Protease Inhibitors should be able to take VIRACEPT T.
