Orders from Brazil for the tests climbed to 18,000, SDS President Ronald Lealos stated, and other orders have been coming in from the Bahamas, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Oman. SDS has also continued to make sales of Sero-Strip HIV-1/2, a serum-based rapid test, to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. And 50,000 Omni-SAL, the company's saliva collection device, were sold in October to Osborn Laboratories in Canada. Home Access Health Corp., an Illinois company that recently began marketing an HIV home-collection testing system, also purchased Omni-SAL units in October, as did Hemotex of London, said Lealos.
The tests are sold at $2-3 per unit, and the collection devices at about $1.50, he added.
"This has been our best quarter yet and it has just begun," said Dr. David Barnes, SDS International's managing director in London.
"Sales from Russia and other areas are expected to increase in 1997, as end-users gain familiarity with the tests."
"As we get regulatory approvals, orders are starting to flow," said Lealos. "We are looking for more approvals in the near future, particularly in China, India and Thailand, where HIV infection has reached epic proportions and created demand for our rapid tests."
SDS products include Sero*Strip HIV-1/2, a serum-based HIV antibody test, and Hema-Strip HIV-1/2, an HIV antibody test that uses a drop of whole blood for analysis. Saliva-Strip HIV-1/2, which uses saliva as a diagnostic medium, is in the final stages of development.
SDS is also developing a rapid test for H. pylori, an ulcer-causing bacteria. All of the tests provide results outside laboratory settings within a few minutes. The company also sells Omni-SAL, a saliva collector used for HIV testing overseas, and Omni-Swab, a collection device used for DNA testing overseas, and other diagnostic devices.
