(BW) Boston Probes begins operations; Will develop diagnostics using unique technology

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 -

BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 26, 1996--Boston Probes Inc. (BPI) announced today that it has commenced operations at its facility in Bedford, Mass. The company is developing diagnostic tests using its licensed PNA (peptide nucleic acid) technology.

Organisms have unique DNA and RNA sequences or fingerprints. When a PNA probe designed to react with a specific RNA or DNA target sequence, for example a viral sequence from HIV, is mixed with a test sample the probe binds only if the virus is present.

By incorporating a reporter label within the PNA probe, the binding can be detected thus indicating the presence of the virus.

Dr. Jack Johansen, the president and CEO of Boston Probes believes, "PNA probes are dramatically superior to conventional oligonucleotide probes for detecting RNA and DNA because they are so discriminating with regard to the sequence of the target.

PNAs also bind more avidly and faster to RNA and DNA providing more robust and speedier assays." PNAs have been shown to greatly improve current DNA probe technologies which require long reaction times and often a complex series of steps for their use. He continues, "The knowledge gained from the Human Genome Project and sequencing of microorganisms is paving the way for explosive growth in the area of probe-based diagnostics.

We're convinced that our PNA probes will replace DNA probes in many assays and that PNA will accelerate the acceptance and use of probe tests in all application areas." BPI's founders and scientific staff have extensive experience in the synthesis, analysis and use of PNA and were instrumental in the development of the technology.

BPI has a license to use PNA probes for detection of human infectious diseases, genetic diseases and cancers. The company also has rights to use PNA for detection of microorganisms in foods, beverages, water, the environment and industrial processes such as pharmaceutical manufacturing. In addition to its own product development, the company intends to enter exclusive strategic alliance/distribution agreements over the coming year and is entertaining discussions with potential partners at this time. Companies interested in access to PNA for diagnostic applications should contact BPI at the number listed below.

BPI was established by DAKO A/S, Copenhagen Denmark, a world leader in the production and sales of antibodies to the research and diagnostic markets. DAKO views BPI and PNA as a strategic complement to its dominant position in antibody technologies.
