Visitors Welcome

Bangkok Post - June 28, 2009

Suphan Buri-born Chainarong Noisakul is one of 20 patients in the terminal stages of Aids (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) at Wat Phrabat Namphu hospice. He has been a part of this community of HIV-infected people for five months. Shunned by family and friends, the 43-year-old is grateful to have a roof over his head, proper meals and medication to slow his deterioration. What he longs for most is people to visit him.

"Apart from volunteers and the medical team, most of the patients in this ward don't get many visitors," said Mr Chainarong. "When visitors do come to make merit at the temple, some of them hesitate to come inside the ward we call home out of fear that they might contract the HIV virus from us. They have nothing to fear because it is not an airborne disease.

"We are in urgent need of muscle relaxant balm, liquid mosquito repellent and medicated bath gel. We would be very happy if people would like to make merit by getting these urgent necessities for us," Mr Chainarong added.
