Politics: Former GPO chief to contest his sacking

Bangkok Post - May 24, 2008

Vichai Chokewiwat, former chairman of the board of the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO), is to lodge a petition opposing his sacking to the Administrative Court next week. Dr Vichai, a key advocate of compulsory licensing, said he will seek justice from the court and accused Public Health Minister Chaiya Sasomsab of abusing his power by sacking the old board.

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the sacking of the entire board, on the recommendation of Mr Chaiya.

Thirachai Wuthitham, a former manager of the national football team, was appointed the new chairman.

Dr Vichai claimed the order dismissing the old board did not have an explanation.

He denied Mr Chaiya's allegations that the GPO's profits had been falling under the supervision of the old board.

Instead, it was under the old board that the GPO had made a record-breaking profit of more than 1 billion baht for the first time, he said.

Nimit Tienudom, director of the Aids Access Foundation, said he will wait and discover the new chairman's position on patients rights to access medicines and the CL issue.

Mr Nimit alleged Mr Thirachai has links with former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and had pooled his money with Mr Thaksin to buy shares in Manchester City football club and sits on the board of Traffic Corner Holding Plc.

Social critic Prawase Wasi said it was a great shame Dr Vichai had been sacked.

He praised Dr Vichai for his performance, knowledge and moral integrity.

Dr Prawase criticised those in power for changing state enterprise boards at a whim and for no good reason.

"Political power lasts only a short time. Changing the boards every time a new government is sworn in will disrupt their performance," he said.

Mr Thirachai said he is ready to be scrutinised and evaluated by the public and says he can manage the GPO, even though he was not trained in the field of pharmaceuticals. He pointed out that there are six doctors on the new board.

The board will only supervise policy and it will not necessarily deal with technical details, he said.
