French football legend Zinedine Zidane yesterday wowed more than 5,000 people who packed Chiang Mai municipal stadium to watch the three-time Fifa World Player of the Year play in a charity football match. The former France playmaker had come for a holiday with his family and to play in the match, which was held to raise funds for HIV-infected children at the Kueadaroon Foundation in Chiang Mai.

At a press conference at the stadium, the children from the foundation had the opportunity to take photos with the football legend, who also signed their pictures.

Zidane said he had never been to Thailand before and was impressed with several places he had visited so far. He also shared his optimism about the prospects for Asian football.

"Asian football is in the process of making a big step forward," Zidane, speaking in French through a translator, said before the match.

"When you see players like Nakamura who are playing in Europe ... they are bringing something positive to Asian football.

"It is also good for future players who are here among us today, who could make this step forward and play in a big European team."

In addition, he held a football clinic for 40 young players selected from eight schools in the province and donated 1,000 footballs to provincial authorities.

The former France playmaker played in the 'Adidas Impossible Match' with leading players from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The exhibition match featured the F50 team, led by former Thai star Piyapong Pue-on and the Predator team captained by Kiatisak 'Zico' Senamuang.

Other well-known Thai players taking part in the festive occasion were Tawan Sripan, Therdsak Chaiman, Datsakorn Thonglao, Niweat Siriwong and Kosin Hathairattanakool. Zidane played 20 minutes for both teams.
