The prisoners who are old, sick, infected with HIV/Aids and those with minor offences will be considered first for release.
The department will teach the inmates about decent social behaviour and how to find jobs that minimise the chance of repeating their offences, said Mr Nathee, adding the released prisoners will also receive 500 baht in pocket money.
In a related development, a former inmate came to the ministry yesterday to ask for government financial assistance after his vending stall was seized by city inspectors (thetsakit) a few months ago.
Rungroj Keerapanee, 45, said he was in prison for 28 years on a murder conviction. He was released last October and began his new life by making animal figures from saw dust, the skill he learned in prison.
A few months ago he was arrested by the thetsakit for hawking and his stall was seized."I only have 20 baht left and no relatives. So far, no state agency has offered help to me." said Mr Rungroj.
