India pledges co-operation

Bangkok Post - July 17, 2004

India's ruling party leader Sonia Gandhi yesterday pledged her government's cooperation, particularly in the battle against HIV/Aids and tourism promotion, said Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai yesterday.

The two countries could learn from each others' efforts in embarking on the fight against the pandemic, she told Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra before leaving Thailand yesterday.

Mrs Gandhi, leader of the ruling Congress Party and chairwoman of the government's National Advisory Council, lauded the on-going efforts between the two governments on improving road and aviation links, especially on the promotion of the 40-minute flight between Phuket Island and Port Blair on the Nicobar Island, Mr Surakiart said.

He said despite having a new government, India's foreign policy remained unchanged as it still supported the Asia Cooperation Dialogue and negotiations on a free trade agreement.
