Call for more state help

Bangkok Post - July 14, 2004

The People Living with HIV/Aids (PLWHA) grouping yesterday issued a declaration demanding much greater governmental and non-governmental involvement in the battle against the deadly disease.

The Bangkok Declaration, announced by the Global Network of People Living with HIV/Aids, and the Asia Pacific Network of People Living with HIV/Aids, urged more participation in decision making on issues related to HIV/Aids by government and non-governmental agencies.

Legal reforms should be undertaken expeditiously in every country to protect the rights of HIV-infected people, said Ms Tuberi, president of the Fiji Network of the PLWHA, who read out the declaration on behalf of some 7.4 million people living with the virus.

She said the conference was a reminder to the world that 10 years had passed since political leaders ratified an agreement at an Aids summit in Paris on this very issue, she added.
