Bangkok opposes political stipulations

Bangkok Post - October 17, 2003
Ampa Santimatanedol

Thailand says it is against major donors including the US blocking "nations with political difficulties" from getting financial support from the Global Fund on Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, said a senior health official.

Deputy health permanent secretary Suvit Wibulpolprasert, also vice-chairman of the global fund's management board, said key donor countries tried to set conditions for recipient countries such as Burma and North Korea, but were opposed by others including Thailand.

"Thailand and other developing countries won't allow the fund to be dragged into political affairs. It's against the fund's purposes because it has been set up for humanitarian principles," he said.

A meeting of fund administrators suggested a panel work out an alternative funding mechanism. The fund management, which met here yesterday, approved US$620 million for 70 projects in 43 countries. Thailand's Care Foundation will get almost 2 million baht.
