Global Fund expected to extend aid through '07

Bangkok Post - October 11, 2003
Aphaluck Bhatiasevi

The government will present its achievements in improving hospital care and community development for HIV/Aids patients when it hosts a meeting of the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria next week in Chiang Mai.

To be attended by health ministers from both recipient and donor nations, including the United States, the week-long meeting will include field trips to hospitals and communities that had been most proactive in attempting to tackle the virus.

Also in attendance would be representatives of the World Health Organisation, UNAids, the World Bank, and the People with HIV/Aids' Network, as well as 200 members of NGOs and support groups.

Among topics under discussion would be the establishment of education schemes and prevention campaigns, as well as treatments for HIV/Aids, tuberculosis and malaria, worth a total of around 25 billion baht.

The government was expected to receive further aid from the fund through to 2007.

Disease Control Department deputy director-general Manit Thiratantikanon said the government had already received about 560 million baht.

Most of this amount would be used to improve the medical infrastructure and train health personnel, as well as campaigns to raise awareness of HIV/Aids among students and blue-collar workers, Dr Manit said.

The main recipients of the fund were the Disease Control Department and the Rak Thai Foundation, he said.

These organisations were mostly responsible for employing other government departments, NGOs and self-help groups in undertaking projects aimed at reducing the number of deaths caused by Aids, tuberculosis and malaria, Dr Manit said.
