Steamy statistics: SURVEY: Durex delves into intimate matters on a global scale

Bangkok Post - June 6, 2003
Kanokporn Chanasongkram

Once again the Internet has been assigned the role of "bedroom detective" in the world's most comprehensive sex survey. "The Durex Global Sex Survey 2003" is the eighth survey of its kind, and this is the second year in which the World Wide Web will be utilised to explore the domain of people's sex lives.

Sponsored by the world's leading condom brand, the annual survey will investigate sexual attitudes and habits, the use of contraceptives, sex education and awareness of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/Aids.

This year a total of 36 countries are expected to take part and reveal their nation's sexual attitudes and behaviour. By clicking into www.durex.com/th and via a banner appearing on www.mweb.com and other mweb network websites, Thais can participate in the survey by responding to an online questionnaire.

Questions cover a range of issues including sex education, sexual initiation, sexual lifestyle, as well as asking opinions of who is the sexiest male and female celebrity, and most charming male and female politician.

The survey is being conducted from today until July 14, and respondents can send their own photo to be featured on the website as representatives of Thailand. In addition, everyone who completes the survey will automatically qualify for a draw to win a high-end digital camera and other prizes from Durex.

From some 50,000 respondents worldwide, the 2002 survey revealed worrying trends over unplanned pregnancies and the complacency towards condom use despite the known risks from STIs including HIV/Aids.

In terms of sexy statistics, last year the French were champions in having sex, claiming a frequency of 167 times a year. Thais ended up second to last with 112 occasions a year, just above Singaporeans at 110.

So in order to catch up with the strenuous sensuality of those amorous denizens of France, perhaps Thai lovers should start singing "voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir" and do their homework before retiring to bed.

Otherwise, in this year's survey Thais may end up being losers in love-making.
