Latest figures show poverty on the rise

Bangkok Post - January 4, 2003
Anjira Assavanonda

Fighting poverty, HIV and drugs tops the Social Development and Human Security Ministry's agenda, Deputy Prime Minister Chaturon Chaisaeng said yesterday.

Speaking to 4,000 staff at a ministerial workshop, Mr Chaturon said the number of people defined as poor had increased from 6.8 million in 1996 to 8.2 million in 2001.

In the absence of measures to tackle poverty systematically, the problem grew worse.

Poverty was linked to other social problems, such as crowded slums and poor city planning which affected mainly low-income earners.

About 400,000 Thais had died of HIV/Aids, with 600,000 infected. Those deaths had left nearly 300,000 children orphaned, and the number was likely to increase to 380,000 in the next two years.

About one million Thais were addicted to drugs. Mr Chaturon said the ministry should set goals and tackle the problems in a systematic way.
