Widows could be spreading HIV-Aids, warns Purachai: 'Teenage' streetgirls not really so young

Bangkok Post - Tuesday 02 April 2002
Apiradee Treerutkuarkul

Fun-loving men should beware of catching Aids from women who have been widowed and turned to prostitution, the interior minister warned yesterday.

Purachai Piumsombun said these women were older and could have been infected with HIV by their late spouses but remain unaware of it.

His comment follows a police crackdown on teenage streetgirls working Lumpini park. Police found many of the "teenagers" were in fact older widowed women.

They dressed up as younger girls to attract more customers.

Mr Purachai said these "veteran sexworkers" could be aiding the spread of HIV-Aids.

The problem was also evident in the South, he said _ Narathiwat's Sungai Kolok district in particular.

But he accepted it was difficult to keep women out of "the world's oldest profession".

Police could only fine them 1,000-baht and then release them, he said.
