Pharmacies face ban on sale of drugs: Hospitals, clinics sole anti-retroviral outlets

Bangkok Post - Monday 16 September 2002

The National Drugs Commission will ban pharmacies from supplying sufferers of HIV and Aids with anti-retrovirals, which will subsequently only be available from the clinics at which they are prescribed.

Under the move, doctors and nurses at hospitals and clinics nationwide will receive urgent training in caring for those infected with HIV and Aids.

The drugs may subsequently be prescribed by all general practitioners.

"Anti-retrovirals can cause all kinds of complications and their use should be monitored," said Deputy Health Minister Surapong Suebwonglee. "Allowing pharmacies to supply these drugs risks detrimental effects to those infected with HIV or Aids."

Patients would be required to undergo full physical examinations before being prescribed anti-retrovirals to prevent any risks of side effects.

"Some drugs from different groups cannot be taken together, otherwise they cause serious complications or resistance in patients, forcing them to use more expensive imported drugs," Dr Surapong said.

The Communicable Diseases Control Department, the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation and the Aids Association of Thailand would organise the training for doctors and nurses around the country.

Dr Surapong said the commission reached its decision during a meeting last week following wide-ranging discussions on the issue, including consultations with the Aids Association.
