Ministry says parents need to learn lot more about sex: Schools expected to pass on knowledge

Bangkok Post - February 1, 2002

The Public Health Ministry will provide sex education courses for parents so they can pass on details to their offspring.

The project would start early this month in 50 Bangkok districts and expand nationwide within two years, with priority given to secondary schools.

Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said ministry research found that only 17% of parents knew much about sex education, and many relied on schools to pass on the knowledge.

"Parents today lack information and experiences to teach their children. More than half still believe that teaching sex education is the school's responsibility, and that widens the gap between them and their kids," said Ms Sudarat.

Young people turned to other sources of knowledge such as obscene videos, magazines, television, the Internet and friends, which were likely to provide them with wrong information.

The minister said sex problems among youngsters were getting more serious amid rapid change in society.

Many young people dabbled in premature sex, leading to problems such as as illegal abortion and HIV infection.

The survey found 17% of HIV-infected people were teenagers, many of whom contracted the disease from casual sex. Pakdi Phothisiri, director-general of the Health Services Department, said training would start on Feb 9, with each course taking a day. School teachers would also get training.
