Drugs were also needed to tackle opportunistic infections which kill people with the disease.
"If the money is spent on anti-HIV/Aids drugs there won't be enough to buy other drugs. And the number of deaths would increase.
"The authorities must not get carried away with anti-HIV/Aids drugs," said Vivat Rojpitayakorn, representing NGOs working with the infected.
Unaids and other agencies could not afford to ignore Asia as they struggled to tackle Aids in Africa, where the pandemic reached a devastating scale, Mr Vivat told the 5th International Conference on Home and Community Care for People Living with HIV/Aids.
The conference was aimed at developing strategies to help protect the rights of HIV/Aids sufferers and to find out how families and communities can tend to their needs.
Peter Piot, a Unaids director, said his agency would try its best to make sure all infected people around the world received equal care.
HIV/Aids sufferers attending the conference would make a declaration on the last day of the meeting to reflect their needs.
Susan Paxton, a sufferer from Australia, yesterday praised the northern community for its respect and understanding for the infected.
Ms Paxton said she spent a short time in Chiang Rai and was impressed by the way families and communities cared for the infected.
