Thai Aids plan adopted as UN conference closes

Bangkok Post - April 26, 2001
Achara Ashayagachat

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific closed its 57th annual session yesterday with a call to prevent the region's Aids problems from reaching African proportions.

Thailand's action plan, which included calls for more attention to Aids education and for technical assistance from developed countries, was adopted as part of the meeting's resolution on the issue.

Five other resolutions concerned sustainable energy, advancement of women, information and communications technology for development, environmental protection and integration of the region's transitional economies into the international trading system, said Escap executive secretary Kim Hak-Su.

The session also dwelled on reform of the commission joined by 61 members and associate members.

The aim was to "refocus" and "redeploy" resources on existing programmes such as poverty alleviation, and assistance to least developed member countries, Mr Kim said.

The latter would involve capacity building in terms of trade and environmental negotiations, and information technology, he said.

The views of non-traditional donors, such as the Nordic states and European countries, on Escap reform would be sought, he said. Escap also would cultivate partnerships with the private sector and regional outfits, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation. The Aids conference was held as a prelude to a UN meeting in June.
