County records HIV case increase

BBC News - August 30, 2009

There has been a small rise in the number new cases of people with HIV and Aids in Cumbria, latest NHS figures have revealed.

In 2008, 23 new cases were recorded in the county, compared with 17 cases in the previous year.

Of the new cases, 61% were contracted through heterosexual sex. Health experts are warning of the dangers of needle-sharing and unprotected sex.

In Cumbria there are now known to be at least 123 people living with the virus.

Jane Muller, NHS Cumbria's associate director of public health, said: "Although there's been only a small number of new cases of HIV and Aids in Cumbria, it's still an issue that we can't ignore.

"If you are having sex with new or multiple partners you need to take the correct precautions, and only condoms can offer protection against STIs, HIV and Aids."
