Council warning over home tattoos

BBC News - August 18, 2009

A warning about the dangers of using illegal tattoo artists has been issued by a Cheshire council.

Council officers in Halton are checking reports of unlicensed tattooists operating out of their own homes or offering to visit clients in theirs.

Environmental health officers said all tattoo artists have to be registered with the local authority.

They said this allowed regular inspections to ensure they were working in a sterile and safe environment.

Officers have warned that serious infections such as HIV and hepatitis can be caught by using unlicensed tattooists.

Anyone concerned they may have been tattooed in unlicensed premises has been asked to contact the environmental health team.

Halton has four licensed tattooists and currently no tattooist is licensed to operate from their own home.

The four licensed tattooists are the Tattoo and Body Piercing Studio, Black Cat, Tsunami and Tafuga Zoo.
