HIV increase in the East revealed

BBC News - October 2, 2007

A large increase in the number of cases of HIV in the East of England has been revealed by BBC Look East.

Between 1996 and 2005 the number of new cases of HIV, the virus which causes Aids, has risen from 57 to 529.

This is the largest increase outside London. The number receiving treatment has risen from 420 cases to 2,891, say the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Luke Mallett, of Cambridge-based sexual health charity DHIVERSE, said more education was needed.

He said there also needs to be greater help for support services.

Mr Mallett said the increase in numbers was partly due to a "rising population in the East of England coupled with an increase in people coming into the region with HIV".

He said there is also evidence that young people are having more unprotected sex and sex at a younger age.
