MP attacks clinic closure plans

BBC News - October 21, 2006

An MP has criticised plans to close sexual health clinics in East Yorkshire as figures show a sharp rise in the number of HIV infections in the area.

The number of adults diagnosed with HIV in the East Riding of Yorkshire has jumped from 10 in 1997 to 31 in 2005, Health Protection Agency figures show.

In September, two primary care trusts (PCTs) in the region proposed closing six clinics from 1 January 2007.

Beverley & Holderness MP Graham Stuart said the plans were "very worrying".

At a joint board meeting of the Yorkshire Wolds & Coast PCT and the East Yorkshire PCT on 28 September proposals were put forward to close sexual health clinics in Cottingham, Driffield, Goole, Hessle, Pocklington and Rosedale.

The move led the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's NHS overview and scrutiny committee to express concern about "the large distances many service users would have to travel to integrated clinics".

Conservative MP Mr Stuart said: "The closure of six East Riding sexual health clinics at a time when infection rates are rising year-on-year would be very worrying.

"Epidemic levels of sexually-transmitted diseases and a rising rate of HIV diagnoses show the human consequence of the government's failure to maintain sexual health information and services - especially for a new generation of young people."

Nobody was available for comment at either of the PCTs on Saturday.
