United kick off season for Unicef

BBC News - August 20, 2006

Manchester United started their new Premiership season with a show of support for Unicef on Sunday.

The club, which has been a partner of the global charity since 1999, hosted several activities at Old Trafford prior to and during the Fulham match.

A giant Unicef flag was unfurled before kick off and will be on display for all Premier League home games.

And the mascot accompanying captain Gary Neville wore a Unicef "Unite for Children, Unite against Aids" T-shirt.

Special messages of support for the Unicef campaign were also broadcast featuring United's Rio Ferdinand, singer Robbie Williams and actor Ewan McGregor.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill said: "At the start of the season, with interest in football high, we feel our first match provides us with a great opportunity to highlight Unicef's vital children and Aids campaign, and our support for it, to as wide an audience as possible."

United winger Ryan Giggs was recently appointed as a Unicef Ambassador.

And players took time out on their recent pre-season tour of South Africa to visit two Unicef-supported HIV/Aids projects.
