Those who do not show signs of their illness cannot now, under the Disability Discrimination Act, be sacked or refused credit or a mortgage.
Scotland has the highest rate of multiple sclerosis in the world.
A spokesman for the Disability Rights Commission in Scotland said the new legislation had closed a significant loophole in the law.
Campaigner Adam Gaines added: "We have been unable to help people who have been diagnosed with serious illnesses and then treated unfairly because they didn't fall under the legal definition of disability.
"This is plainly wrong. People diagnosed with serious long-term health conditions shouldn't be discriminated against full stop."
