Doreen and Reg Langbridge, both 74, from Workington, Cumbria, set up the Philip Langbridge Trust in 1991 following the death of their son.
But after raising more than ú15,000 to raise awareness of the disease they are closing the charity because of lack of volunteers and money.
Mrs Langbridge said: "We have done as much as we can."
She added: "We would never ever have missed a minute of his love, his laughter, the crying and his friendship.
"But with Aids people didn't want to seem to know, they didn't give so freely, but if we have saved one life it will all have been worthwhile."
'Support needed'
Tim Pixton, deputy chief executive of HIV charity the George House Trust, said the disease was a bigger problem in Cumbria that most people realise.
He said: "People seem to forget that infections are rising. Since 1997 the numbers of people with HIV has doubled in this country. It certainly hasn't gone away.
"Cumbria is a relatively low incidence area for HIV but there are many people with the disease and they need support."
A spokeswoman for primary care trusts in North Cumbria, said: "Our best tactic is still awareness-raising and reminding people of the ways to protect themselves and those they love from infection by HIV or any other sexually transmitted infection."
