Exhibition charts history of HIV

BBC News - December 1, 2004

World Aids Day is being marked by a special exhibition charting the history of HIV in Brighton and Hove.

The event organised by the Terrence Higgins Trust at the Friends Meeting House, in Brighton, on Wednesday will include items of personal memorabilia.

The Brighton Aids memorial quilt will be the centrepiece of the exhibition, with each panel remembering the life of someone who has died from Aids.

Over 800 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in the South East in 2003.

Glowing candles

Rod Watson, regional manager for the Terrence Higgins Trust South, in Brighton, described it as the "fastest-growing serious health condition in the country".

"This World Aids Day, take the time to think about your own sexual health, and also look at some of your beliefs about HIV - are you as well-informed as you think?" he said.

Students and staff at the University of Sussex will also be marking the annual event by decking the campus in red ribbons, including one made of glowing candles.

Trees will be covered in red fabric and large banners will be hung across the campus grounds.
