Pupils quiz MLAs on AIDS

One person was diagnosed with HIV every week in Northern Ireland last year and infection rates are still rising, according to a leading charity.

Save the Children is highlighting the disease by giving schoolchildren the chance to discuss the problem with local politicians at Stormont on Tuesday.

It will mark the eve of World Aids day.

The charity's Christine Patterson said it was vital young people in Northern Ireland realised Aids and HIV affected everyone.

About 60 pupils from secondary schools across Northern Ireland are expected to attend the event at Stormont.

It is being jointly hosted by Amnesty International and Save the Children.

The pupils will ask assembly members what can be done in Northern Ireland.

Speakers will include SDLP assembly member Carmel Hanna, chair of the assembly All Party Group on International Development, Dr Deo Ladislas Ndakengerwa, president of the Rwandan and Burundian Community in Ireland and Vijay Rajkumar - HIV and AIDS adviser with Save the Children.
