Vietnam chief visits Aids patients

BBC News - Wednesday, 25 August, 2004

The president of Vietnam, Tran Duc Luong, has called for an end to the stigmatisation of people with Aids.

Following a high-profile visit to an Aids hospital in Hanoi, the president told reporters that HIV-infected people should be treated like any other member of Vietnamese society.

He said that HIV-Aids was not a social evil, a term used by the communist government to describe illegal activities such as gambling, prostitution and drug addiction.

Vietnam says there are about 80,000 people infected with HIV in Vietnam, though some experts think the real figure could at least three times higher.
