Correspondents say the court ruling could result in claims arising from many thousands of similar cases throughout China, where the use of unsterilised equipment for the collection of donated blood was relatively common practice.
The government said last month that large volumes of plasma had been bought from peasants by collectors who failed to observe government regulations and procedures.
The husband and three-year-old daughter of the victim in the compensation case have themselves contracted the HIV virus.
Under the court ruling, the hospital will pay the compensation in monthly instalments.
