China steps up Aids campaign

BBC News - Friday, 3 August, 2001

The Chinese Government says it plans to keep the annual rate of growth in the number of cases of HIV infection, Aids and sexually transmitted diseases STD to below 10%.

A deputy director of the Ministry of Health department of disease control, Chen Xianyi, said the annual growth rates in these cases has remained above 30% in recent years and the situation was getting really dangerous.

Chen Xianyi said the government urgently needed to fight against drug use and the illegal sale of blood.

Official estimates put the number of people in China infected with HIV, the virus that can lead to Aids, at more than 600,000 but medical experts say the actual figure could be much higher.
