Support the Mass Red Ribbon Ride

Bay Windows - August 10, 2006
Ethan Jacobs, ejacobs@baywindows.com

A determined group of about 135 cyclists will trek across the state Aug. 12 and 13 to raise funds for eight HIV/AIDS organizations in the third annual Mass. Red Ribbon Ride, and ride manager Andi Genser said there will be opportunities throughout the weekend for people across the state to show their support. Genser said the public is invited to cheer on the riders at their Aug. 12 stop at Smith Vocational High School in Northampton, where riders will close out the first day of the ride, and at Regis College in Weston Aug. 13, where riders will finish the ride. Genser said that for the riders, many of whom are making the full 175-mile ride from Pittsfield to Weston and some of whom are riding only part of the route, support from the public is crucial.

"For so many of our riders this event is something they have been working months for and is incredibly meaningful to them, and there's nothing like having people cheer you on along the way. For many it brings tears to their eyes, so it really means a lot," said Genser.

For those planning to turn out at Northampton at the end of the first day Genser recommended arriving sometime between 3 and 6 p.m. Attendees who want to cheer for riders as they cross the finish line in Pittsfield should get there from 2 p.m. on. There will also be a closing ceremony and barbecue at Regis on Aug. 13 from 5-7:30 p.m. that is open to the public.

Beyond providing moral support for the riders, Genser said it is not too late to provide financial support by sponsoring individual riders or ride teams. Genser said people can donate by logging on to www.massredribbonride.org, and they can either sponsor a rider or team or make a direct donation to any of the eight sponsoring organizations.
