Search for a Cure dinner to discuss latest in treatment, prevention

Bay Windows - May 25, 2006
Ethan Jacobs, ejacobs@baywindows.com

On May 30 Search for a Cure, a Boston-based nonprofit that does education and advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS, will host its 12th annual forum on the latest developments in prevention and treatment, called The Latest News. The forum will feature presentations by Community Research Initiatives Research Director Dr. Cal Cohen, who will discuss new HIV drugs coming down the pipeline, and Fenway Community Health Center Medical Research Director Dr. Ken Mayer, who will discuss new prevention strategies.

Search for a Cure founder and former Boston City Councilor David Scondras said the forum, which will be held at Boston Living Center, is designed to be a resource both for people living with HIV and those interested in keeping up with latest developments in the epidemic.

"For some people it helps them see alternatives to what they're doing that they can then explore with their doctors. Someone who's having trouble with their existing regimens, they can talk out an alterative," said Scondras. He also said it was important to keep people informed "because politically we call on these people to help if there are problems."

Beyond simply providing information Scondras said another goal of the forum is community-building.

"There's the importance of people feeling connected to each other in a joint effort," Scondras said. "This is a war, a struggle that's best done as a family. We're trying to put an end to one of the world's worst epidemics and there's a need to do that together."

The Latest News takes place May 30 at Boston Living Center. There will be dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by presentations at 6:30 p.m. The event is free, but an R.S.V.P. is required. To R.S.V.P. call 617.945.5350 or e-mail hope@sfac.org.
