Cambridge celebrates LGBT Health Awareness

Bay Windows - March 9, 2006

Cambridge Care about AIDS (CCA), the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), and the Cambridge GLBT Commission will celebrate the fourth annual National LGBT Health Awareness Week March 13-17, providing free screenings for two days at Cambridge City Hall and hosting a luncheon to bring together city officials and clients and providers of HIV services.

"It's really an opportunity for, Cambridge being such a progressive and active and intelligent community, we feel that it's important to bring awareness of issues about GLBT health into the community," said Stephen Crowe, program manager for CCA's Peers Using More Prevention (PUMP) program and a member of the GLBT Commission.

On March 13 CCA will host a lunch for CCA staff and clients, CHA providers, GLBT Commissioners, and city officials at its offices. The lunch is closed to the public, and Crowe said it is an informal event to help kick off the week.

On March 15 and 16 CCA, CHA and the GLBT Commission will host a community outreach table outside Cambridge City Hall, offering information for the community, referral information to LGBT-friendly providers, and testing for HIV and other STDs. Crowe said that this year marks the first time Cambridge organizations have held a major public event to mark LGBT Health Awareness Week.

"It's a way for people in the community to be there to speak out about what our friends need, our peers need, our clients need around GLBT health issues," said Crowe.
