Red Ribbon Ride puts out the call

Bay Windows - January 26, 2006
Ethan Jacobs, ejacobs@baywindows.com

The third annual Mass. Red Ribbon Ride, which will be held Aug. 12-13, may seem a long way off, but organizers are working to get as many riders registered as early as possible to start the training process. The ride, which benefits more than eight Bay State HIV/AIDS organizations including AIDS Action, JRI Health, and AIDS CARE/Hampshire County, treks across a 175 mile course running from the Berkshires to Weston.

"We know that when people make an early commitment it really gives them something to focus on," said ride manager Andi Genser. "Typically weÆve gotten more of our people in March [or] April, and what we know is if they make the commitment now theyÆll find the training and fundraising much easier than if they make the decision three months from now."

As incentive Genser said anyone who either enters or, for those already registered, convinces a friend to register by Feb. 27 will be entered into a raffle. After the deadline there will be a drawing, and the prizes include a new Fuji Ace 2005 model road bike, a free overnight stay at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Pittsfield, where riders will stay Aug. 11 before the start of the ride, and a Starbucks gift basket that includes a $50 Starbucks card.

There are no currently scheduled training or recruiting events, but Genser urged people interested in the ride to regularly check the ride Web site, www.massredribbonride.org, for details on upcoming events, which she expects to begin in the next few months.
