MAP for Health was founded 10 years ago to address HIV and AIDS in Boston's Asian/Pacific Islander (API) communities, and over the years it has expanded from one part-time employee to a current staff of nine. Much of the organization's prevention work has focused on prevention work among gay and bi API men.
The anniversary celebration, which will be held at the Courtyard Boston Tremont Hotel, will honor two people who Yang said have been instrumental in helping MAP for Health carry out its work. Quynh Dang was one of MAP for Health's founders, and Yang said she has been a strong supporter through the years. The other honoree, Dr. Bikash Verma, formerly worked in the state Department of Public Health's HIV Surveillance Program but has since become the president of the International Health Organization, a Boston-based organization that works on health and development issues in South Asia. Yang said Verma worked with MAP for Health while at DPH to help them track HIV in the API community.
"Dr Verma and his colleagues at the HIV Surveillance Program were really helpful, running data runs for us breaking out the Asian HIV epidemic," said Yang.
The event will also feature performances by MIT's Bhangra Team and the Gund Kwok Asian Women's Lion Dance Troupe.
