In 1989 McDonnel, who served as a deacon at Old South Church, attended a prayer meeting for people living with HIV/AIDS and their supporters. During the two previous years McDonnel had taken part in the AIDS Walks as a way to make a difference in the gay community, but he had no firsthand connection to the epidemic. As the attendees at the meeting went around the circle and explained why they were there, McDonnel was stunned when one of his closest friends revealed that he was HIV positive.
