Red Ribbon riders dampened, not defeated

Bay Windows - August 19, 2004

The 120 participants in the second annual Mass Red Ribbon Ride trekked 175 miles across Massachusetts Aug. 13 and 14 to raise funds for 18 HIV/AIDS organizations around the state. Although tropical storm warnings prompted organizers to cancel the third day of the ride, organizers report that many participants completed the ride independently or in groups.

The festivities for the ride began the morning of Aug. 13 with opening ceremonies in Pittsfield. The ride moved from the Berkshires, through Northampton and Amherst, over the Quabbin Reservoir, and ending in St. Regis College in Weston.

Riders who committed to riding all three days each raised a minimum of $2,100 for the event. Organizers of the Red Ribbon Ride worked to keep down administrative costs to maximize the funds going to the participating HIV/AIDS organizations.

Rebecca Haag, executive director of the AIDS Action Committee, which produced the event, said sponsors also hoped to use the ride to raise awareness about a projected $2.4 million shortfall in the state's HIV Drug Assistance Program, which provides HIV/AIDS drugs to people who cannot afford them.

"We are hopeful that the Legislature will pass a supplemental budget next week which will address this shortfall and ensure that no citizens of our Commonwealth are placed on a waiting list for life-saving drugs," said Haag.
