Live and let live: World AIDS Day Dec. 1 Annual awareness event targets HIV discrimination

Bay Windows - November 27, 2003
Lisa A. Eramo

With the theme of "Live and let live," this year's world AIDS day, marked across the globe on Dec. 1, will focus on ending the stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV/AIDS.

World AIDS day was inspired by the World Summit of Ministers of Health on AIDS in 1988 as a time to show compassion and hope for those suffering from HIV/AIDS. Today, the day recognizes strides that have been made, such as anti-discrimination legislation, and focuses on remaining challenges, including educating people in safer sex, encouraging open discussion, and ensuring people with AIDS receive the treatment they need.

Massachusetts will mark World AIDS Day with a variety of events. AIDS Action Committee, along with other organizations including the Boston Center for the Arts, Cambridge Cares About AIDS; Northeastern University's Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Straight Alliance; the Boston Living Center; Community Research Initiative of New England; and the New England AIDS Education and Training Center are all sponsoring events such as luncheons, candlelight vigils, and a panel discussion on HIV and the media.

The Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) is sponsoring its 12th Annual Medicine Wheel art exhibition, a 24-hour vigil beginning Nov. 30 at 10:30 p.m. Participants will walk from the BCA to Fort Point Channel, where they will gather water and return to the Cyclorama rotunda for an opening ceremony at midnight. The water will then be poured into a "water room" at the Cyclorama. The procession will be repeated at 3 a.m., 6 a.m., 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m., and 9 p.m. on Dec. 1.

The installation at the Cyclorama also features a field of parched earth, a well, an oasis of water, and thirty-six pedestals where people can leave offerings such as flowers, poetry, photographs, or other tokens.
