Mission clinic marks 20 years of HIV work
The Mission Neighborhood Health Center will hold a gala event tonight (Thursday, October 15) to celebrate its 41st anniversary and the 20th anniversary of its HIV clinic, called the Clinic of Hope. The event takes place beginning at 6 p.m. at the Elan Event Venue, 839 Howard Street in San Francisco.
The gala also commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month and National Latino AIDS Awareness Day.
Those being honored include Rafael M. Diaz, Ph.D., the founding director of the Cesar Chavez Institute, and Virginia Scribner, LVN, HIV clinic manager.
The evening includes a lavish reception, live auction, entertainment by the Salsamania Dance Company, and a special appearance by actress Gina Ravera of ER and The Closer and who was raised in the heart of the Mission community.

Temenos Catholic Worker anniversary party
Temenos Catholic Worker, a street outreach program in the Polk Street neighborhood, will hold its 15th anniversary celebration on Saturday, October 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Noe Valley Ministry, 1021 Sanchez Street (at 23rd). The evening's speaker will be Stephanie Salter, a former San Francisco Examiner columnist now with the Terre Haute Tribune Star.

Horizons' online auction ends soon
For the second year, Horizons Foundation is holding an online auction, Celebrate@Home, instead of its usual formal gala as a way to raise funds for the LGBT grantmaking organization. The auction ends Sunday, October 18 at 10 p.m.
The decision to repeat the online auction was based on the success of last year's event, as well as the economic realities currently facing the LGBT community.
The online auction features a wide array of items, including cruises, a getaway to Costa Rica, tickets to live performances, a professional photo shoot, and other items.

Holly Near at New Spirit church
Singer-songwriter and human rights activist Holly Near, one of the first out lesbian musical performers, will be the special guest preacher Sunday, October 18 at New Spirit Community Church, 1798 Scenic Avenue in Berkeley. The Reverend Jim Mitulski, pastor of the church, said that the event is part of New Spirit's fall arts series. The service begins at 11 a.m.
Near will also be performing with emma's revolution at the Montclair Women's Cultural Arts Club, 1650 Mountain Boulevard in Oakland on Saturday, October 17 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 and available at www.brownpapertickets.com.
NLGJA chapter hosts Fall Honors benefit
The Northern California chapter of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association will hold its annual Fall Honors benefit and awards reception Monday, October 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Postrio Restaurant, 545 Post Street in San Francisco.
This year's honorees are Jane Goldman, editor-in-chief of http://www.Chow.com, for her continued support of NLGJA and her breadth of work in the journalism world; and Roberto Hernandez, a radio producer and host of "Roberto al Mediodia" on KIQI 1010 AM as well as a columnist for Alianza Metropolitan News , based in San Jose, for his work as an LGBT voice for the Hispanic community.
Additionally, Clayton Trosclair, a graduate student in the journalism school at the University of California, Berkeley, is the recipient of the 2009 Bob Ross Student Scholarship. The $2,500 award is being presented to Trosclair, who is an LGBT voice in the newsrooms of several television stations.

Health care reform forum
The California LGBT Health and Human Services Network, part of the Equality California Institute, will join Our Family Coalition and the San Francisco LGBT Community Center to host a town hall meeting to discuss the LGBT community's need for health care reform on Monday, October 19 at 6 p.m. at the center, 1800 Market Street.
The forum will feature a panel of leaders who are working at the intersections of LGBT policy and health issues. Some of the speakers include Diane Sabin, executive director of the Lesbian Health and Research Center at UCSF; Lance Toma, executive director of the Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center; Judy Appel, executive director of Our Family Coalition; Masen Davis, executive director of the Transgender Law Center; and Kyriell Noon, executive director of the Stop AIDS Project.
Following the panel presentations there will be time for questions.
AHP body image workshop
The UCSF AIDS Health Project will present a forum entitled, "Body Image: A Workshop for Gay Men" on Friday, October 23 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the AHP Services Center, 1930 Market Street. The workshop will look at issues such as how to feel more positive about one's body and less concerned about how one thinks others see their body. Body image can affect relationships and sex, and even HIV-related risk.
The workshop is free and for gay and bisexual men, regardless of HIV status. Pre-registration is required and can be done by calling (415) 476-6448, ext. 1. For more information about the agency, visit www.ucsf-ahp.org.
SFGMC to hold benefit concert
The San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus is joining forces with Larkin Street Youth Services on Saturday, October 24 to present a special matinee performance of "What A Wonderful World" at the Regency Center, 1290 Sutter Street. The concert begins at 2 p.m. There are also evening performances on October 23 and 24 at 8 p.m.
Teddy Witherington, chorus executive director, said that the collaboration was born when a chorus member noted that Larkin Street is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Hosted by Bay Area Reporter society columnist Donna Sachet, "What A Wonderful World" is a cabaret performance featuring an uplifting collection of songs performed by Vocal Minority, a chorus ensemble, live band, and the chorus' finest solo voices directed by Carl Pantle.

A special $10 ticket is available for "unwaged" supporters such as students. In addition, those attending will be invited to make a donation to Larkin Street.
Choral group raises over $4,500 for groups
The gay men's vocal ensemble Colla Voce raised more than $4,500 during a pair of concerts last month in San Francisco.
The concerts, entitled "Eine Kleine Afternoonmusik," featured classical and pop music by German and American composers.
The show at Metropolitan Community Church-San Francisco benefited the Metropolitan Community Foundation's partnership with the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, which is currently raising funds for school supplies. A second concert, held at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, was a benefit for the Welcome Ministry program of Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries, which offers a unique communal response to the needs of the homeless.
The next Colla Voce concert will be held in early spring, 2010; a beneficiary has not yet been selected. For more information about the group, visit www.colla-voce.org.
New Leaf board member receives grant
New Leaf: Services for Our Community has announced that board member Stacy Lewis received the Gap Inc.'s Founders' Award in recognition of her contributions to New leaf, one of the nation's leading outpatient centers that serves the LGBT community.
Lewis, a project lead who creates training and communications in the corporate architecture and construction department at the Gap, received a $15,000 grant to build a robust volunteer-run volunteer program at New Leaf.
Volunteers play an important role at New Leaf, noted clinical director Steven Harlow. Lewis's paid time at the nonprofit will be used to design, develop, and implement an orientation and training curriculum for volunteers, and to participate in the agency's volunteer enhancement task force.

Sarah Ann Davis Memorial
A memorial service for Sarah Ann Davis (whose obituary was previously published in the Bay Area Reporter) will be held on October 25, 10 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church 1350 Waller St.
Davis passed away April 17, 2009 in Marion, Iowa after a long battle with Alzheimer's. During the 1990s, she swam in the California Master's Program and competed in the 1994 Gay Games in Vancouver, where she won nine gold medals. She also appeared in the documentary Coming Out Under Fire, which told the story of gay men and women in WWII.
