Bay Area Reporter - August 13, 2009
"Can a Pill a day Prevent HIV?" is the subject of Thursday's panel discussion, which takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the ceremonial room at the LGBT Community Center, 1800 Market Street in San Francisco.
Panelists will include Dr. Richard Loftus, activist and HIV/chronic disease management specialist; Dr. Moupali Das-Douglas, Dr. Albert Liu, and Jennifer Sarche from the health department; and longtime HIV activist Matt Sharp.
Research is currently under way on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which may be a way to reduce the risk of HIV infection for HIV-negative people through the use of daily medication. But it is not yet known if PrEP works. The panel will discuss these issues.
The second forum takes place on Monday, August 17 from 6 to 8 p.m., also at the LGBT center. The forum will discuss the latest in HIV efforts. Panelists will include Dr. Willi McFarland of the health department and Jan Hecht of Stop AIDS. Presentations will include new data from Stop AIDS' recent collaborative study, which looked at various places in the city and how changes can be made to environments to reduce the chances of HIV transmission and data from what the community is telling STOP AIDS personnel on the street and in the bars.
