DOJ clarifies rights for PWAs

Bay Area Repoter - August 13, 2009

The U.S. Department of Justice has released a fact sheet clarifying the rights of people living with HIV or AIDS to access training and licensing for occupations such as barbering, massage therapy, and home care.

The DOJ has released this document in order to ensure that people with HIV or AIDS are not discriminated against because of vague or outdated laws. Many states have broad licensing requirements for certain professions that require applicants be free of communicable diseases. The DOJ document clarifies that because HIV is not communicable through casual contact, these restrictions should not apply for people with HIV or AIDS.
