Leading local and national experts will discuss the HIV epidemic in San Francisco's black gay community. Topics will include black gay men in the Tenderloin, isolation and mental health, stigma, and "macro" issues such as health care, housing, and employment.
The summit is free of charge; breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided. Those planning to attend should e-mail John Newsome at jlnewsome@gmail.com.
The summit is sponsored by the Department of Public Health's HIV Prevention Section, the SF Black MSM HIV Working Group, and the LGBT center's SNAP program.
Health care forum
Single Payer Now, a group advocating for health care reform, will host a meeting Saturday, January 31 entitled, "What Obama Needs to Know About Health Care Reform" and why federal legislation, HR 676, the U.S. National Health Insurance Act, can solve the health care crisis. Organizers said that they would answer 35 questions about the bill in 35 minutes.
The meeting starts at 3 p.m. at Centro del Pueblo, 474 Valencia Street (at 16th), one block from the 16th Street BART station.
Speakers will include Jaime Becker, intern with the California School Employees Association; Barbara Commins, RN, from San Francisco State University; Lou Gold, with Single Payer Now and SEIU Local 2579 (retired); Carolyn Long, a retired social worker at UCSF; and Bechler, chair of Single Payer Now.
AIDS Housing Alliance benefit
The AIDS Housing Alliance/San Francisco will hold its fifth anniversary party and benefit Saturday, January 31 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the new Bar on Church, 198 Church Street in San Francisco. Admission is $5. Organizers said that there will be drink specials and delectables from Lime Restaurant. Additionally, "Desperate Divas" will be on hand, as well as other entertainment.
'Dance for Equality' benefit
Organizers with "Dance for Equality" are having a benefit Saturday, January 31, with 100 percent of the proceeds being split evenly between efforts to overturn Proposition 8 and to help Richmond Jane Doe, the lesbian who was raped in Richmond during a brutal attack last month.
Wen Minkoff and Tara Walsh are producing the event, which takes place from 7 p.m. to midnight at Just Dance Ballroom, 2500 Embarcadero in Oakland. Admission is $15 per person in advance or $18 at the door.
There will be a cash bar, light refreshments, and a silent auction. More information, including directions, is available at http://www.danceforequality.com.
