News in brief: Condom creations for PI benefit

Bay Area Reporter - October 9, 2008
Cynthia Laird, c.laird@ebar.com

HIV treatment education and advocacy organization Project Inform will hold its annual Evening of Hope fundraiser Wednesday, October 15 that will feature a fashion show of designer creations made from condoms.

The event, dubbed "A Night of Lifesaving Fashion," will be hosted by Jack Mackenroth, one of the fashion designers to compete on the hit Bravo TV show Project Runway. Mackenroth will be showing a wedding gown made of condoms, and other notable designers will also show their fashions. Executive Director Dana Van Gorder called the event "a fashion show with a message."

The event takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. at the new Intercontinental Hotel, 888 Howard Street in San Francisco. Tickets are $150 and can be purchased online at http://www.projectinform.org.

Free flu shots at Magnet

Magnet, the gay men's community health center in the Castro, will be providing free flu shots on Fridays during the month of October. The inactivated (killed) vaccine takes about two weeks to develop protection.

Health officials noted that people who are at risk from complications from the flu, and people who can spread the flu to others, should get vaccinated. That includes people 65 or older, residents of long-term care facilities, and individuals with long-term health problems, muscle or nerve disorders, or weakened immune systems.

Serious problems from flu vaccines are rare, with mild problems including soreness, redness or swelling where you got the shot, as well as temporary fever and aches. People should not get a flu vaccine if they are allergic to eggs.

Vaccines will be available from 5 to 8 p.m. October 10, 17, and 24 and from 5 to 7 p.m. on October 31. For details or more information, visit http://www.magnetsf.org, or call (415) 581-1600.
