Organizers note that 100 percent of donations pledged go directly back to East Bay AIDS organizations. The walk is a grassroots effort that started in 2005. While the San Francisco event does include some East Bay agencies as its beneficiaries, there is a greater need for funds in response to the increasing new HIV infections in Oakland and elsewhere, according to organizers.
"The East Bay AIDS Walk is community oriented and real," said John Iversen, a co-founder of ACT UP/East Bay and the Berkeley Needle Exchange who is participating with his team, Friends of Ugandan Orphans. "No big names, no bells, no whistles - we are the stars and our reward is barbecue."

Under One Roof sale
The annual Under One Roof off-site merchandise sale featuring home and giftware items opens today (Thursday, September 4) for two consecutive weekends. The sale will be held at the former Tower Records store, 2278 Market Street in San Francisco. Sale dates are today through September 7 and September 11-14. Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Sunday; and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
Mark Burns, Under One Roof's general manager, noted that this would be the store's last year at the Tower site.
"It's only appropriate that we offer our loyal - and our new customers - the biggest sale ever," Burns said.
Bargains will be available on area rugs from Home Depot, bedding from Macy's, bath products from Jane Inc., and gift and decorative accessories from the world's top manufacturers, as well as sofas, tables, and wall art.
Under One Roof's sales benefit 30 HIV/AIDS organizations, with 100 percent of profits from the off-site event as well as those at the permanent Castro store going to the agencies. For more information, visit http://www.underoneroof.org.
