Ms. Kent died last December 21 at her home in Durham, North Carolina following a nearly two-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was 55.
Friends helping organize the memorial said that there will be a period of contemplation and meditation beginning at 10 a.m., followed by the program at 11. A reception in the grove will follow.
The National AIDS Memorial Grove was close to Ms. Kent's heart, and her friends are raising funds in order to install a new, engraved boulder in the Woodland Creek at the grove, which will be a special place to visit and remember her.
Ms. Kent was involved in the early days of the Friends of Oscar (now Academy of Friends), and helped turn that nonprofit group into one of the most successful AIDS fundraising organizations in California.
She also helped the Federation of Gay Games as it went through its growing pains, as she was hired to help with its strategic planning four years ago, as it struggled with the 2006 Gay Games and the competing Montreal Outgames, taking place in the same year.
Those interested in contributing to the grove project can mail donations to: National AIDS Memorial Grove, P.O. Box 2270, San Francisco, CA 94126-2270. Please indicate that the gift is in memory of Debra Kent. Donations can also be made online at http://www.aidsmemorial.org.
