News in brief: New site for recycled meds

Bay Area Reporter - November 29, 2007
Cynthia Laird, c.laird@ebar.com

The Recycled AIDS Medicine Program has announced the opening of its new collection site at Tenderloin Health, and will have a welcoming party Monday, December 3 from 1 to 2 p.m. Tenderloin Health is located at 255 Golden Gate Avenue in San Francisco.

RAMP gathers unused HIV medications through its collection sites in the Bay Area and other locations, and provides them to clinics in the developing world where access to life-saving drugs is limited or non-existent.

RAMP has had collection sites in the Castro for many years. This collaboration with Tenderloin Health will create the first collection site in the Tenderloin.

Interested people are welcome to attend Monday's launch of the new site; refreshments will be served. For more information about the program, visit http://www.rampusa.org.

Sparks, a transgender woman, made history earlier this year when she was elected commission president. She also is CEO of Good Vibrations. She is expected to discuss her life and activism.

ARFC has funded projects in China that have never been done before to redefine HIV prevention efforts there. One such innovation, the five household co-op project, provides loans and farming technology to rural families living with HIV.

New home sought for porn sale

Now that Arthur Hurwith has stepped aside from his popular annual porn sale benefit for the San Francisco Prime Timers senior group, he is hoping a nonprofit organization can take over the event, which is usually held in June.

"'The end of an era' is a comment I've heard more than once when people learned that I will no longer be doing the annual porn sale," Hurwith wrote in a recent e-mail message sent to supporters. The "Final Blowout Sale" on November 3 resulted in $1,300 being given to the San Francisco Prime Timers. Hurwith said that over the past eight years, a total of $17,560 has been raised for the senior group.

Hurwith said that an organization would need to have ample storage space, as donations come in all throughout the year, as well as personnel to sort the donations prior to the sale and to work during the event. Hurwith, who had to stop hosting the sale due to health reasons, has set a target date of January 1 to clear out his garage. Anyone with ideas should contact him at (415) 648-8678.
