Remembering Jeff Getty

Bay Area Reporter - November 16, 2006

There was laughter and tears as more than 100 friends, family members, and colleagues of AIDS activist Jeff Getty paid tribute to him at a memorial service Saturday, November 11 at the LGBT Community Center in San Francisco. At right, Mr. Getty's longtime partner, Kenneth Klueh visits with Mary Foley and Arianna Comyns during a reception prior to the service. During the memorial, Mr. Getty was fondly remembered as an activist who could inspire fear and hope in others. "Jeff was at his best with a raised fist in the air," said longtime friend and fellow activist Michael Lauro. State Senator Carole Migden (D-San Francisco), who worked with Mr. Getty to fund organ transplants at UCSF for those living with HIV, recalled Mr. Getty's "unflagging spirit." And Supervisor Tom Ammiano told the audience that Mr. Getty "wanted to make a difference." Klueh and Mr. Getty's three sisters made emotional remarks about the man they loved. Mr. Getty, 49, died October 9 of heart failure following cancer chemotherapy and after a long struggle with AIDS. He made medical history in 1995 when he underwent an experimental procedure and received a baboon bone marrow stem cell transplant that was ultimately unsuccessful.
