Immigrant march Monday

Out4Immigration will be among the participating groups in an immigrant rights march slated for Labor Day (Monday, September 4) in San Francisco. Organized by the Bay Area Immigrant Rights Coalition and other groups, the event aims to send a message to President Bush and members of Congress about the vital role immigrants have in the U.S. economy.

Out4Immigration is a grassroots organization whose members include many same-sex binational couples and their supporters. Current federal law prohibits Americans from sponsoring their partner of the same gender for a green card - a right provided to Americans who have partners of the opposite sex. The organization supports the Uniting American Families Act, which would provide same-sex couples with the same immigration rights entitled to heterosexual couples. Currently the legislation is before Congress.

Monday's march begins at 10 a.m. at Justin Herman Plaza; participants will march to Civic Center. For more information about the march, visit www.immigrantrights.org.

TLC benefit next week

The Transgender Law Center will mark its fourth anniversary with a fundraiser Tuesday, September 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Crash nightclub, 34 Mason Street at Market in San Francisco. The event's theme is "A Movement in Motion," which organizers said is a nod to this summer's successes in the community and the work yet to be done.

Among the highlights TLC participated in this year are: the dedication of a permanent plaque commemorating the Compton's Cafeteria riot on the street corner where it happened; the adoption by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors of the Comprehensive Transgender Employment Initiative; and a national conference on violence against transgender women and gay men.

TLC also will recognize individuals and organizations for the work they've done, including Sister Mary Elizabeth, who was instrumental in establishing California as one of the most progressive states in the country in recognizing transgender people's ability to obtain birth certificates and driver's licenses that reflect their true identity. Other honorees include Judy Van Maasdam, the Horizons Foundation, the San Francisco District Attorney's office, the Ark of Refuge, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and Equality California.

Tickets are $50 to $150 and are available online at www.transgenderlawcenter.org or by calling (415) 865-0184.
